This week we saw the Advertising 5-a-side league draw to a close 🏆
What a season it’s been 🤩
Only a few months ago the thought of playing competitive sports was only something we could dream of.
We've had it all.
A PROPER title race. A fight for Division 1. And of course, the battle to avoid the wooden spoon. We’ve had some wobbles along the way, even some handbags at points but we did it. We gave Covid 2 firm fingers and now, a champion must be crowned.
Going into the week we had three teams gunning for the trophy 🏆
All eyes on Wieden + Kennedy this week 👀 Ahead of the final fixture, captain Ollie Pym had been questioned if this game was bigger than his imminent wedding. Silly question, of course this is bigger.
But could they do it? 😬
I know you’ve read the table. You know how this goes but for the Wieden + Kennedy staff who’ve stuck around, let’s enjoy it.
Pitch 12. Shoreditch Powerleague. Floodlights on, fans at the sidelines, whistle in hand.
What we saw over the next 40 minutes epitomised the Wieden + Kennedy we’ve seen all season, apart from that one time they’d all been on a stag do 🤫
Solid from back to front, oozing class. Droga5 couldn’t break them down and W+K started to create space. And when they create space. They score goals and goals they scored. Droga5 kept battling and nicked a couple to keep a few twitchy bums in the arena.
Although slick interplay from W+K began to wear Droga5 down and allowed them to take a 13-3 lead into the half-time break. After the break, we were blessed with vintage W+K. Screaming for penalties and scoring goals 😱
If there was any debate over Mike Waywell's alliances they were shot down after a tremendous save, diving to stop an absolute HOWTZINGER 🧤
Droga5 needed a few more of them to stop W+K this week, as they went on to win the fixture 21-4. A valiant effort from @Droga but the opposition were just too good and deserving champions.
There we have it. Wieden + Kennedy, champions of Secta Leagues Summer Advertising 5-a-side league 🏆
A massive shoutout to AMV BBDO & adam&eveDDB who took it to the final week with only a few goals in it 👏
But what happened elsewhere?
Going into the week we had another battle on the agenda, with the top 6 going on to create Division 1 of the Autumn League.
R/GA, BBH London and Ogilvy UK were being chased by a Saatchi & Saatchi team who have picked up some form and desperately striving for that 6th place.
An Ogilvy UK loss opened the door to the unthinkable and all Saatchi & Saatchi needed to do was to win by more than 6 goals. Not an easy task but Saatchi captain, Alexander Boden, prepared his strongest 5 that were up for the challenge, dispatching of VaynerMedia London 20-6.
A massive congrats to all teams that took part and a big thanks to those that donated to Mind (official figure coming soon).
